What is the Means Test For The SASSA Old Age Grant?

How to Apply for the SASSA Old Age Grant

If you would like to apply online, please read the instructions on how to apply online through the SASSA services website, or you can submit an application in person at your nearest SASSA office branch.

Any trusted friend or family member can apply on your behalf if you are too old and unable to go to the SASSA office yourself. You should provide a doctor’s note explaining why you are unable to visit the SASSA office along with your application.

Applicants applying for the Older Persons Grant must bring the following documents (originals or certified copies) with them:

  • The 13-digit number on your original identity card. In the absence of an ID:
  • To complete the affidavit form, you must use the SASSA standard affidavit template and the process must be witnessed by an Oaths Commissioner who is not affiliated with SASSA. The SASSA affidavit can be obtained from SASSA officials or downloaded here.
  • In order to verify your name and age, you must bring a sworn statement signed by someone with a solid reputation (such as a counselor, social worker, religious leader, or school principal).
  • Your fingerprint will be taken by SASSA in order to process your application. Your ID will be requested from the Department of Home Affairs while your application is being processed. Your application will be suspended by SASSA if you do not provide the ID.

  • In case of marriage, you will need a marriage certificate 
  • When a marriage is dissolved, a divorce decree is issued
  • You must provide proof of your current address

  • A copy of the last three months’ bank statement.
  • A discharge certificate issued by your former employer or proof of Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) membership (also known as “Blue Book”) is required if you have previously worked. 
  • For spouses who have died within the past 5 years, you must provide a copy of their death certificate, their will, and the initial and final liquidation and distribution accounts (if applicable).

SASSA Older Persons Grant Processing Time

Applications for the older persons grant usually take about three months to process. Following the approval of your application, you will begin receiving payments.

Your grant will be approved after the application has been processed and all payments have been made. If your application is rejected, SASSA will send you a letter explaining why you weren’t approved.

Understanding the SASSA Old Age Grant Payment Process

You will start receiving payments from the date your old age grant has been approved. As SASSA doesn’t have any fixed dates, they release the payment schedule every month. Make sure you know when your payments are due. 

The grant payments will be made to you via one of three methods (you must choose one):

  • The money will be deposited directly into your bank or Postbank account. You may be charged a service fee by the banks.
  • Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, Checkers, Usave and Spar are SASSA-partnered retail outlets where you can withdraw your grant payment in cash. 
  • It may come from a specific institution (e.g. an old age home, a disability center, or a nonprofit organization).

  • You should have your own bank account number

A form can be filled out in the welfare office at any time if you want to update your bank account or payment method. After the verification is completed, the new payment method will be used to receive payments the following month.

SASSA Old Age Grant Reviews
